Kushushu eco-friendly firelighters

Turning Trash Into Treasure

Waste generation is estimated to increase by 70% by 2050 if current trends continue. This will be a catastrophe, as current landfills and waste management systems are already struggling to keep up with the amount of waste we produce. Due to the structure of our current linear (take-make-waste) economy, many valuable resources have been overlooked and classified as “waste”. By properly utilising this “waste” we can reduce our dependence on landfills, reduce the amount of raw materials we extract from the environment and create sustainable economic growth.

This was exactly the aim when developing our first product, to use waste materials and create something useful with it. What we came up with is a way to use waste paper and waste cooking oil, that would have otherwise ended up in landfill, to create eco-friendly firelighters. The benefit is three-fold: It redirects waste from landfill, reduces the use of traditional petrochemical based firelighters and brings to life eco-friendly firelighters that are in many ways superior to its traditional equivalents.

The name, Kushushu, translates to “hot” in Xhosa and Zulu and that’s exactly what you will be saying after using our eco-friendly firelighters: “IT’S KUSHUSHU!”
